One of the most common chimney code violation that is often overlooked when purchasing a home, is a chimney that has no liner.
Not all flue fires can be prevented, however you can greatly reduce your risk by having a licensed chimney professional clean and inspect your chimney at least once per year.
If your chimney does not have a chimney liner, we can correct this issue and bring your chimney up to code by installing one of our stainless steel liner systems in your chimney. Before we install a liner, we recommend having a chimney safety inspection to evaluate the chimney's structure stability & fire worthiness. They will then be able to determine what type of lining system you need to burn safely and efficiently.
We recommend that you do not burn in a flue that is not properly lined. Also remember to have the chimney cleaned and inspected annually.
Prior to inspection, the chimney should be cleaned to ensure that there is no build up, dirt, and cobwebs masking any cracks, damage or signs of a flue fire. This will also help to ensure that the flue is free of obstructions.
Chimney liners
Many older homes have clay flue tiles; however we often find that these tiles are not installed properly, crack easily or in some cases they are completely missing. If you are wondering what type of lining is in your chimney or not sure if there is anything at all inside the chimney, one of our CCS Certified chimney sweep technicians can perform a full safety inspection for you.
The CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) recommends that every chimney be lined, then cleaned and inspected annually. Today’s building codes require that residential builders line a chimney during the time of construction. However, most often than not, we find that new chimneys are not being lined, have poor drafting and other serious issues. Why is this? One reason is that many contractors assume that chimneys are basic construction. This is not the case. When building a chimney, there are specific codes and formulas to use that will ensure the chimney’s safety, integrity and proper drafting. For example, a flue size must have a specific fireplace opening or the chimney will not draft causing the home to quickly fill up with smoke. But don't worry, NFC has solutions for this problem!
Chimney liners are essential for your chimney appliance to work efficiently, draft properly and operate safely.
A chimney liner protects your home from the high temperatures that are produced by a fire, keeps the masonry materials of your chimney safe from the corrosive byproducts of combustion, and provides a properly sized flue to your heating appliance to avoid potential draft problems.
